Underway Meades Local Nature Reserve
Conservation and community volunteering
Underway Meades Local Nature Reserve is located in Combe St Nicholas and lies at the junction of Underway and Combe Hill. It has belonged since 1998 to the Combe St Nicholas Parochial Trust. The site is managed as a parish amenity promoting the conservation of wildlife, encouraging enjoyment, recreation and educational activities for the local community.
The Blackdown Hills AONB’s former Natural Future’s Project selected Underway Meade as one of 15 community initiatives to support providing funding and staff support.
Work that has been undertaken at the reserve has included the installation of bat and bird boxes, new footpaths and access points, hedge laying, tree plants and various community events.
The reserve trustees are looking for volunteers to join their team and assist with the following:
Practical conservation work
This would involve practical work to help with the maintenance of the site for both the local community and wildlife- this might include hedge laying, path creation and maintenance etc depending on the season. Volunteers will need to bring their own hand tools as only a limited number are available on site.
No previous experience required, just a willingness to get stuck in and enjoy fresh air and good company! The group usually volunteer for an hour or two on Saturday’s but there is also the opportunity to volunteer during the week.
The volunteer group also run community events on sites so there may be the opportunity to get involved in this.
